The Beltway/DC Snipers
Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen Muhammad

Malvo Got Life, Muhammad Got Death

Who was John Muhammad?  Relatives describe a normal childhood. John married high school sweetheart Carol Ann Kaglear on 11/22/1981 in Baton Rouge. They had one son, Lindbergh, who was born 10/04/1982. Relatives said he left his wife and son, however, about the time he enlisted in the Army on 11/06/1985, serving at Fort Lewis near Tacoma, Wash.

That was also about the time that he embraced Islam, relatives said. In the military, he faced disciplinary charges as well as earning honors for the Gulf War. He was discharged on 4/26/1994. With his second wife, Mildred Green, he had three children. She eventually left him in March 2000.

Jailhouse Doddle By Malvo

Who was Lee Malvo?  Not long after Lee Malvo was born in the gritty, crime-riddled Jamaican capital his father abandoned him. Still, "he was always a mannered child," remembers his mother, "even to adults or other kids around."

In 1999 his mother uprooted her son and moved him to the Caribbean island of Antigua. She says she was in pursuit of a better life. There she obtained forged papers that allowed her to enter the United States illegally. She bought them for $1,500 from John Allen Muhammad.

Malvo's mother rejects reports that she abandoned her young son when she left Antigua and sneaked into the United States. She insists she left the boy with friends. But whatever really happened, within months Malvo was living with Muhammad.

He appears to have found the father figure he had long craved, the two called one another "father" and "son". Soon Malvo had converted to Islam like Muhammad had done 10 years previous - then he quit school.

Months later, Malvo finally did join his mother in the United States, but within weeks he ran away to join his mentor Muhammad who was now in Washington state. And the rest...is history.

John Allen Muhammad, 42, and Lee Malvo, 17, were arrested, while in the process of trying to sleep in their car in a Frederick County, Maryland rest area, off I-70. After a tip from a priest in which he heard a confession of the killing, there had been an APB put out for New Jersey 1990 blue Caprice with a license plate of N2A21Z. Shortly after hearing that message on the radio, a man drove in to a rest area, where he spotted the vehicle, and called authorities.  After impounding the car, the gun, a tripod, scope, and trap door in the trunk of the car were examined.  Ballistics and testing have confirmed that the gun found in the vehicle is the same gun that was used in 13 shootings in the DC area.
