There is an idea in the Talmud that at all times there are at
least 36 truly righteous people. It is actually their existence, and
goodness, and how is reverberates out from their existence onto the people and
world around them that good persists in the world. Their example, their
deeds, their being, transform those around them to make this mess of a world
bearable, and keep it on the right track. The idea in the Talmud being
that it's because this minimum always exists that the world's existence remains
worthwhile.
The identity of these 36 is not necessarily known. And why should it be.
The 36 most righteous people in the world are bound to include some people who
never became famous. What is famous? I mean, look at who is
famous...this is not a requirement for being a taddik, and perhaps, might even
be a hinderance.
Perhaps most of them are total unknowns. Hopefully they are. Just go
be a taddik yourself. Do something right, true, decent and unselfish and
change the world. Maybe one of them is you.
